Rail passenger transport plays a major role in urban, suburban and medium-long distance connections, shouldering the role of a structuring and high-capacity mode. Fostering its integration in the travel chain while creating conditions to effectively fulfill its structural function steps in as the main challenge.

 

Rail freight share of transport has been growing, though being small relative to other modes of transport (mainly low in Portugal, representing less than 10% whichever the indicator used for this comparison). However, its gradual increase is expected, driven by the need to shift to less environmentally and energetically harmful modes of transport which raises important questions on integration (gauge, electrification, control systems, etc.), regulation and management to ensure a flow of processes capable of ‘preserving high levels of economic and service efficiency.
